I have wanted to create this DIY Pottery Barn Inspired Fur Office Chair Makeover for YEARS. Not even kidding. Working for a CPA firm, I have had my fair share of time in a cubicle. And as much time as I spent in that tiny grey felt box, I spent just as much in my office chair. Gosh, that thing was gross. It was like they pulled it out of some storage and after 5 years, not a single person thought to clean it. Then when I finally get used to it, someone up and steals it one day. Offices. Psh.
While living in my sad cubicle, I had dreams of making it my own space. Something I enjoyed being in. Here is an example of what I wanted my cubicle to look like, since I was spending up to 80 hours a week in it during tax season.
This Potty Barn Chair had always been something I wanted. But that price tag – OUCH! Man, I love me some pottery barn but for the majority of things in my life, I just can’t afford it. And the awesome thing is, you don’t have to! You can literally make this Pottery Barn-inspired fur task chair yourself
I had been using a dining table chair in my sewing space for the past 3 years until my husband was able to bring home his old office chair for me! Score! I’m really on board this whole finding things for Free thing. If you would have asked me 3 years ago, I probably would have stuck my nose up at the idea but now I’m really starting to have fun making things on our own without spending much money.
Today I’m so excited to share with you a really quick and fun office chair makeover that I had been wanting to do forever. It was so easy that I don’t know why I didn’t just hop to it sooner! This office chair was functional before but now it adds the perfect amount of girly glam to my workspace.
Here’s what you will need:
- Office Chair
- Fur Fabric
- Scissors
- Stapler
- E6000 Adhesive
- Curved Upholstery Needle
- Coordinating Thread
Step 1: Remove Seat & Paint
I decided that this chair needed a refresh on the legs. The silver and black didn’t feel glamorous to me, so we needed some GOLD!
Before spray painting the legs gold I removed the seat and decided to ditch the armrests entirely. I prefer the look and functionality of a drafting chair!
Step 2: Staple fur to seat
I laid out the fur fabric on the floor and traced a 5-inch perimeter around the chair seat. After cutting the fur, begin stapling. Staple the sides then go in and clip and staple the corners to smooth the curve. Don’t worry about trying to make it perfect, this fur fabric is SUPER forgiving. You can easily cover any seams by just fluffing the fur at the end.
Step 3: Drape fabric and trim
This part really isn’t a science. I draped the fabric over the chair’s back and trimmed it down so that it was slightly bigger on all sides. I clipped the sides together to get a feel for it, then proceeded to tuck and glue the backing. E6000 is a super strong adhesive and will hold basically anything to anything but it is also pretty toxic so definitely use in a well-ventilated area!
Step 4: Hand sew sides together
Using a curved upholstery needle, begin sewing the sides together starting at the top and working your way down. I folded each side of the fabric so that it fit taut without any raw edges exposed. I also doubled up on the thread to increase the strength and prevent the thread from breaking easily. Finally, gently fluff the seam to erase the line!
Step 5: Reattach Seat
Lastly, just reattach the seat and enjoy your fabulous new glam office chair! This entire project took ONE AFTERNOON to complete while pregnant and with 2 little kids running around. If I can do this, so can you!
Don’t be like me and wait years to just do this project. This DIY Pottery Barn Inspired Fur Office Chair Makeover was so quick and easy but the results are hugely AMAZING! Let me know if you have any questions about this project or if you decide to try it yourself. I’d love to hear from you!
