Hey, there friend! Today I’m going to be making some labels for my daughter’s drawers to help her identify where to find her things and where they go – as she learns to help more. This is usually the first step (outside of routines for the day) in creating patterns of organization in her brain. The brain loves predictability. Even as adults anything we can put on autopilot frees up our minds to do other more enjoyable things. By visually putting labels on their clothing drawers, you allow their little brains to create a pattern of predictability and certainty, which empowers their mind to take on more!

This is such an easy and cute DIY that actually will have an impact on your child’s sense of self. When they begin to take true ownership of self, it opens the door to them taking ownership of their heart, mind, and morals (which must be taught!).

Some things that we are going to need to make these labels are:

My daughter has six drawers and her newly configured bedroom.

We actually just put in a room divider so that my two daughters can share a room. They are six and four and still have trouble with boundaries. We divided the room to give a sense of privacy for each to really feel like they have their own space – which they desperately wanted.

With privacy comes responsibility.

We are holding our 4-year-old accountable for taking care of her little clothes. I try to keep our wardrobes minimal. There are only a few pieces for her to manage but the point is – without labels, she will surely shove the entire stack of folded clothes into a single drawer and smash it shut!

With the labels, she is held responsible for putting her things where they belong. When she opens a drawer and sees that there is a picture of shirts but she’s holding pants. Here she faces a moral crossroads. Put the pants in the shirt drawer and be “done” or find the correct drawer and put them in their place? What choice would you want your child to make? What choice would you make? Little choices of choosing the right thing will fill up life with abundance.

It starts now, with helping your kids make choices like putting their clothes away, you are empowering them to take responsibility for themselves! Little by little, learning is like a funnel and the goal is that as they get older that funnel widens and they eventually become the best versions of themselves that they can be!

Take this easy mom-win! Print it out, cut it out, and tape it to their drawers. They are going to love it!
