I can hardly think of anything more magical than little girls playing in flowers, dressed up as fairies. It all started with a fairy garden in our backyard and blossomed into a favorite game of make-believe and magic.

Fairy Garden

This child’s birthday party is inspired by pixie hollow, Disney fairies, and of course the most famous fairy of all time, Tinkerbell. Here are 10 of my favorite party details from my daughter’s 5th birthday party.

Tinkerbell the Fairy is a very special guest!

No sense in any delay. Let’s pull out the big guns first! Booking a character is a great way to take off some of that pressure to entertain. FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER – I HAD TIME TO JUST WATCH AND ENJOY THE PARTY!!

We used The Storybook Character Company and it was absolutely magical!

Here are 3 super helpful things I did to prepare for our special guest.

First, have a designated area for her to set up shop. This directs the performance, so set the stage! We made a sort of ‘stage’ using cheap green felt on the ground in front of our backdrop.

Second, I made sure the kids were all fed lunch and played party games before she arrived. Starting with me first asking all their moms for permission to give their kids instructions, like herding them to the bathroom to wash hands and sitting them down for lunchtime.

Lastly, I served cupcakes just before she arrived so the children were stuck to their seats eating frosting, not knocking Tinkerbell down in excitement. You know how kids can get… Everyone was content to sit in their chairs, eat cupcakes and watch the performer.

We booked Tinkerbell for 1.5 hours and she did a great job with answering questions in character, leading storytime, teaching a fairy ribbon dance, and a couple of other activities for the kids. The boys drifted off after they finished their cupcakes but those little girls were glued to her side until it was time to leave. All the parents said it was the best kids’ birthday party they had ever attended! All it took was some organization, some early planning, and some pixie dust.

The Backdrop

After buying this cheap 8×6 photo backdrop from Amazon, I needed a way to hang it up. I bought one of those cheap tripods that said it would hold up an 8×6 backdrop but when I set it all up, it looked really stupid. So we needed a solution.

We have a surplus of wood on our sideyard at the moment due to a shed project halted by a nosey neighbor and an uptight city building code, so I asked hubby to whip me up something I could just staple this backdrop to. But this homemade wood frame ended up being way better, way more sturdy and I was able to pull out most of the wrinkles by using my staple gun to secure it to the wood frame! If you’ve ever bought a backdrop, those wrinkles can be such a pain to get out, even with an iron.

If you’re interested in how we made it, drop me a post at the bottom and I’ll get the deets for you on how it was built. For now, I just wanted to share an inexpensive way we transformed our backyard into a pixie hollow. Perfect for a photo op! Cheeeeeseeeee

How fun is her dress and wings?! Both homemade and so much fun to make! The wings are made with green 12 gauge wire and iridescent cellophane.

I used the sewing pattern ‘7681 Vogue for Me’ for the main part of the dress. But also used ‘McCall’s M6420’ for the overlay. She really wanted the bodice of her dress to be made of ‘soft fabric’ aka stretch knit. The knit fabric made it difficult for the bodice to hold up the skirt. I made the skirt with unlined stretch taffeta and quilters cotton to reduce the weight. Even so, I had to add a halter strap secured by 2 green snap buttons. It worked amazing! I was then able to add a narrow pocket in the back of the dress so the fairy wings could slide right in.

Homemade cupcakes are made easy by freezing ahead of time!

Cupcakes were homemade. Baked and frosted and then frozen in plastic (freezer-safe) cupcake traveling containers.

Baking your own birthday cake and/or cupcakes can really save a TON OF MONEY in your party budget.

But making a mess in the kitchen so soon before having a party is not ideal.

I like to keep my house clean and minimal in the days leading up to a party. It helps to keep my clutter stress low. Plus baking under pressure is never enjoyable for me. I prefer to bake in advance and then freeze. Just be sure to pull them out of the freezer 12-24 hours ahead of time. Allow them to defrost in the container in the fridge. The key is to avoid condensation from building up on your frosting because the water will change the consistency and appearance. Not a good look.

The other treats were from Costco and Aldi. Easy peasy, thrown onto a white platter.

This fairy cake though… can you tell Mama made it? lol

Okay, Once upon a time I could create a stable multi-layered cake. But for real, that was then and this is now. LOL

Now I’ve got 3 kids, 5 and under, and more projects than I have time. So here’s how this went.

I bought an inexpensive cake layering kit off of Amazon and it was garbage. Plus the cake layers were on the narrow side, also not a great look. And finally, the frosting was too soft for the Russian piping tips, so it looks like a lump of frosting flowers. (I now found the most wonderful buttercream for flowers recipe! Ask me for it, I’m happy to share)

But who cares about any of that? My daughter sure didn’t! These Disney Fairy figurines saved the day and my kid still thought it was magical cake. Sometimes you just gotta laugh at yourself and try better next time!

Table Rentals and Colored Linens

This might seem like an obvious thing to some but you would not believe the huge impact renting tables and linens can make! Bonus points if they deliver and pick up, just don’t forget to tip!

Plenty of seating and a Jump Castle

I don’t know what it is about an inflatable house of magic but kids freaking love them. If you have the budget that allows it, jump castles are always a win for kids’ parties. This size here is toddler size. It was just right for our backyard space and held up well with the 15 kids that attended the party.

Bubbles, Fairy crowns, & Wings

We set up this fun station for kids to go grab some bubbles or put on a fairy crown or a pair of wings to wear for the party. I wanted to add in some fairy wands but just ran out of time. It would be a fun addition though!

Flower Sugar Cookie Favors

pixie hollow fairy Party Cookie Favors| https://goldengluegun.com

These Flower frosted sugar cookies were a great favor option for 3 reasons.

  1. It’s not more clutter. I’m so glad the days of giving kids bags of dollar store junk are ending
  2. These can be made ahead of time and kept in the freezer.
  3. They are actually really delicious!

I used Russian Piping tips again but I used a wonderful ‘crispy’ cookie frosting recipe and it really helped with the structure of the flowers. Sealing plastic bags were bought in bulk on Amazon and I love finding new ways to use them up!

Here are links to my most favorite cookie recipe and frosting recipe. Follow it exactly and you won’t be disappointed!

Fairy Village Toys

This fairy scene was a fun way for the kids to have some imaginative playtime.

I set a stool out so they could take a peek at the happenings in the little fairy village. It was adorable to see little girls climbing up to explore the scene.

My daughter also enjoyed setting it up for her party. We just took the houses and figures from the fairy garden box we have out in my garden. My girls love to play there when mama has some garden work to do.

Personalized fairy coloring pages

These awesome custom fairy coloring pages were a hit with my girls! Etsy has a fabulous selection with a super-fast turnaround time. I was able to buy them at night and by the next morning, my order was ready. I printed it at home from my laser printer.

Here is the listing I bought: Fairy Coloring placemat

I did have grand plans of laminating the kid’s coloring sheets. That way it could be a take-home favor that could be used as a placemat. But the party got away from me and I completely forgot! Plus there ended up being a lot of kids and not enough help to pull off this activity.

That wraps up my list of 10 fun ideas for a Pixie Hollow fairy birthday. I actually have a lot more photos and details from the day so if you want to see more leave me a comment below and then I’ll add a slideshow at the bottom with a party detail photo dump. But you have to ask!

I hope you enjoyed these 10 Pixie hollow fairy party details. If you have any questions or want to know where I got something drop me a line below.
