True and the Rainbow Kingdom is an animated children’s show on Netflix. The show follows a girl named True as she helps the citizens of the Rainbow Kingdom by using magic wishes given to her by the wishing tree. True and the Rainbow Kingdom is a cute and colorful show that my daughters are crazy about. While it is not exactly educational, I have found that it still has positive lessons and a happy, upbeat attitude. For which I’m pleased to have kids emulate throughout the day. Plus, it makes for a fun twist on a classic rainbow birthday party!

For Evelyn’s 2nd birthday last weekend, we took inspiration from True and the Rainbow Kingdom and threw our very own rainbow house party! Woop Woop!

Although this wasn’t a kids’ party of pre-COVID days, I would argue it was better. We invited immediate family members only to celebrate our girl and saved a bundle of money on not having to make goodie bags, planning party games, or feeding a whole wild crew.

Here are the 8 ways I decorated for a True and the Rainbow Kingdom-themed Birthday Party. Maybe you can find some inspiration for throwing your own rainbow shindig!

1. The Birthday Banner

This True and the Rainbow Kingdom Birthday banner really brought this birthday party to life! Did you know you can buy these printed banners for CHEAP on eBay? I was so excited to learn that! I always thought custom-printed banners were only for, well, fancy people. But here’s the deal, they come from China, so you need to order a month or two in advance. And they were probably made unethically and definitely not a sustainable product. So there’s that.

That being said, the kids seriously go wild to see their favorite characters on the wall for their birthday! We like to leave it up for a few days afterward. After that, we move it to their room so they can continue to enjoy it for weeks to come. I paid $15 for this 3’x5′ banner and the shipping cost $5. I taped it to the wall using rainbow masking tape. The tape is 1inch width so I layered the colors to look like a rainbow.

This Colorful Masking tape was purchased on Amazon. This stuff is a favorite around here for easy kid activities (like walking on the line) and taping artwork to their walls.

2. The Rainbow Balloons

Nothing says ‘Birthday Party’ like balloons! While I’m normally a huge fan of those dramatic cascading balloon arrangements, I just didn’t have it in me to blow up that many freaking balloons. Mama is tired ya’ll! Hubby and I grabbed a random assortment of rainbow colors from our party box (aka all the leftovers from every party ever) and strung them in ROYGBIV order. Is anyone else hooked after watching The Home Edit? Literally, every bookshelf around here is organized ROYGBIV now. I’m obsessed. My husband thinks I’m crazy. Crazy awesome. At least, that’s what I tell myself!

Cumulo is the cloud that True and Bartleby fly on to get to the Wishing Tree. Since the banner was missing Cumulo, I hand-painted a cute little Cumulo face on a white balloon. Using these awesome acrylic paint pens, and drawing on the eyes, cheeks, and mouth was a fun and quick little side project that the kids absolutely loved!

3. The Rainbow Polka Dot Party Snack Cups

Now that’s a mouth full. No pun intended! These COVID- friendly snack cups were a HUGE hit! I filled them with some healthy options that I wanted my kids to munch on. Some blueberries and strawberries. (But for the day we called them Nummleberries!) The snack cups also included Fishy Poof Crackers (aka Princess Goldfish) since they are Bartleby’s favorite! These adorable polka dot cups also held Cheeze-it snack mix and Mother’s pink and white circus cookies. Perfect snacks to make everyone feel like a kid again! I piled them onto a 4 tier acrylic cupcake Stand and called it a day. Super simple snacks for a super simple day.

For dinner, we got In-N-Out burgers for everyone. Lemme just tell you, that was a great success! I took everyone’s order mid-party and then my husband and brother went through the drive-thru and brought it all back. No prep, no clean-up, and it was an incredible value! Would recommend it, and will do it again.

4. The True and the Rainbow Kingdom Party Dress

True Inspired party dress for girls

My little Lorelei strongly suggested that they should dress up as True and Bartleby in honor of her sister’s 2nd birthday. True has blue hair and wears rainbow socks and Bartleby is a purple cat. While I was not willing to get messy and color any hair, I could get on board with some rainbow socks. Then I started thinking… then I got excited.

One of my favorite things is sewing dresses for my girls. Sewing brings me joy. Sometimes I get a crazy idea. Has the good idea fairy ever visited you? Then you know, THE ONLY OPTION is to make it happen!

It’s fun and easy to sew for little girls!

I love scrolling Etsy for all those unique handmade items. But there is something truly special about making it yourself. The inspiration came as I was sorting the girl’s closet. Their favorite dress is a “Rapunzel” dress that literally never got finished. The hem is still raw because I abandoned that project when I wasn’t impressed with that old-fashioned style. Lorelei found it one day in my sewing room. For her, it was love at first sight. But it took some time to grow on me.

The best part is that this dress is like the sisterhood of the traveling pants. Magically, the size 2T pattern fits them both perfectly. Despite a 2 year age difference! I figured since one pattern (already on Swedish tracing paper) could make 2 dresses that equals a super productivity win! Haha

For this True and the Rainbow Kingdom-inspired party dress, the Simplicity Pattern 8348 was used in the size 2T.

I ordered an adorable True Pom Pom style headband from a seller on Etsy but despite best efforts, it just did not make it in time for the party. Improvision had to happen. I fashioned a True “inspired” headband out of bows we had on our bow holder and some extra white elastic.

5. The Birthday Gifts

Of course, the icing on the cake for any little girl’s themed birthday is matching character dolls! These are a huge hit with my girls. We first gifted True and Bartleby in their Christmas stockings and I was a little shocked by how they toted these dolls everywhere. I found these on Amazon and purchased one or two a time over the course of 2 months using excess saved in the ‘kids budget’.

6. The Rainbow Candy filled Piñata

I am half Mexican and growing up it wasn’t a real party unless there was a piñata. And let me tell you, it was some serious business. We got into it. We gave it our all hitting it with a bat and the mad dash to pick up as much candy as we could.

Now, my kids are little and aren’t nearly as serious about piñatas yet but I felt like it was a fun and easy addition to their parties. I’m not crazy about the candy part. I’m not one of those no candy moms (But no refined sugar before age 1). However, I don’t let my kids keep their candy.

After a few minutes, I gather it all up and then dole it out sparingly. I put all the candy in a gallon ziplock bag “to protect it from ants” and then put it up high in the cupboard. Whenever I need to incentivize a child, a small piece of candy can whip them into a can-do attitude! I like to have that stash on hand, ready to be used as bribery. Just don’t eat it all yourself, you may regret it later. Speaking from experience.

7. The Rainbow Birthday Cake

Rainbow Birthday Cake - Homemade and Delicious!

This cake is technically just a crumb-coated cake. Womp womp. I ran out of time (and ideas) for this cake. Leaving the white buttercream exposed, I simply just wrapped a rainbow ribbon around it.

To keep the ribbon in place, use 2 clean and sanitized sewing pins pushed through the ribbon and into the cake. Top it off with a cake topper and a rainbow candle!!

A tired mom’s birthday cake! Doesn’t look too bad, right? I got this cute Rainbow Happy Birthday cake pick on Amazon. Rainbow plates, too.

But wait there’s more. It’s a rainbow on the inside!

Homemade rainbow birthday cake

Now, this is where the magic is! I created this rainbow cake to mirror the rainbow style found in True and the Rainbow Kingdom. They aren’t the ROYGBIV kind, so I took some time to plan and design the kind of rainbow I wanted.

This is the first time I took the time to plan out my cake and I really enjoyed the process. If you are interested in planning your homemade cake I would be happy to share my printable cake planning sheet. Just let me know in the comments below if this is something you are interested in! This cake was made using three 7″ silicone cake pans.

Bonus: Print your own coloring sheets at home!

I don’t know if you know this, but True has her own website and they have all kinds of FREE printables there! I downloaded some super fun printable coloring sheets and activities to help the kids transition throughout the day. You can get your own copies at TrueandtheRainbowKingdom.com.

In the end, all it took was a banner from eBay, some colorful balloons, rainbow socks, and a character dress, yummy snackies, and a rainbow cake to create this True and the Rainbow Kingdom birthday party at home. Leave any questions or comments below! I love to chat with you!
