Speaking as a mom of 3, two in diapers, not the same size, I needed a way to keep my bag neat and tidy! You can sew a diaper pouch that is the perfect size for a good amount of diapers and wipes. Having to constantly refill my fancy store-bought diaper pouch was a pain. Sew a diaper pouch that is big enough to hold up to10 diapers. Which is generally more than enough for a typical outing. I typically carry not only diapers but wipes and dog poop bags too! Sometimes a baby will have the nastiest smelliest blowout poop diaper in the least convenient spot and you just have to cringe knowing that the trash can is not a diaper genie. And it’s going to smell for everyone… eek… sorry people. But nope, when you bring a scented doggie bag you can put the diaper in the bag and throw it away without shame. lol

What you’ll need:

  • 2 – 9.5″ x 12.5″ Liner Fabric

  • 14″ Zipper
  • Basting tape
  • 18″ of .5″ Bias Tape
  • HTV Design

If you have a Cricut, I’ve made this design public in Cricut Design Space. Follow this link to create your own project using this exact design!

Before beginning (Optional)

Attach HTV Design decal to the front of your outer fabric. I like to find the center point and then place the design about a half inch above that. Definitely, don’t be like me and forget to use a press cloth while attaching the HTV. Always use parchment paper or a press cloth, otherwise, your design won’t apply beautifully.

Tip: For this project, leave the backing on until the end. This will prevent any unwanted heat from ruining your image, say from iron while you are pressing your seams.

How to sew a Diaper Pouch!

To start – Place the zipper.

Here is the secret to stress-free zippers. Basting Tape. I’m using a double-sided transparent tape that disappears after the first washing. It can be sewn through without gumming up your needle, which is very very important. Not all basting tapes are the same, some are not safe to be sewn through. Make sure the one you get is safe for your sewing machine needle! Basting Tape makes working with zippers sooo much easier and faster too!

Take one piece of lining fabric and place it right side facing up. Place the zipper right side up on top. I like to use the basting tape along the top of the fabric and then press the zipper into it.

Next, Lay the outer fabric, right side down on top of the zipper. The Design should be facing the right side of the liner fabric. Clip in place.

Using the Left side of your zipper foot, stitch all the way down the length. Go slow and feel your way down.

Iron and then press the sides open.

Make sure you press all sides to open really well. Next, you would typically topstitch but I honestly can’t sew a straight line very well so I skip the topstitching. I figure no line is better than a crooked on. Your call.

Repeat the steps above by first laying down a liner face up. Then place the zipper (with the attached fabric) face up on top of the liner. Next, line up the outer fabric face down. Pin or clip in place. Sew down and press open.

Open up your project and unzip to about halfway.

Clip the right sides of the outer fabric together and clip the right sides of the liner fabric together. It’s also important to have the zipper leaning toward the liner. Leave a small opening on the side where to open zipper is. I have marked the open area with small yellow clips. Some people put the opening at the bottom but I don’t like that because in case the stitch accidentally opens up, any small items can fall into the between.

Insert your handle loop between the sandwiched fabric.

Before taking it to the sewing machine, fold your sewn bias tape in half. I like to put my handle on the side where the zipper opens. place the loop end of your handle inside the sandwiched outer fabrics. Clip or Pin in place.

Using your regular presser foot and a 5/8″ seam allowance (Stitch Setting 00 on Brother CS-6000i), Sew all the way around, stopping at the marked opening.

Be very careful when sewing with zippers. Take it nice and slow so that you don’t accidentally break a needle. Speaking from experience, having a broken needle ricocheted at your face is not fun. Lucky for me, I always wear eye protection. 🤓

Side note: For added strength, backstitch over the handle before continuing onward.

After stitching around the entirety, clip off the excess zippers. Then reach your hand into the whole and turn your project right side out!
