Let me just say, we LOVE Hawaii! 😍 Okay, maybe it’s just me but I’m crazy about our Hawaiian family vacations. Growing up, we would go just about every year, starting when I was 2. Fun fact, I come from a long line of Hawaiian vacationers. 😎🌴My husband and I had gone only once before this, for our babymoon, so this trip was our very first as a family! I was so excited for my toddler to start experiencing the place where I’ve made so many great childhood memories. And what better way to make memories than to commemorate with photos while wearing matching outfits?!
Maybe I went a bit overboard.
I just LOVE cheesy family outfits. It’s like wearing a team uniform, a family team uniform. Go Team Family! 🏆 I really did want to just buy a set of family outfits for our trip to Hawaii but I simply couldn’t justify spending money on an outfit that could have been made 20 years ago. So in true Britney fashion, I took it upon myself to make our outfits. I spent more time and stress making these outfits than if I had just bought something off the rack. But that ain’t me. I guess I just like to make things complicated. 😉
This fun & modern tropical floral print fabric is called Watercolor Tropical Hibiscus and can be purchased at Joann Fabrics.
For DH’s shirt, I used McCall’s Men’s Button-Down Shirts M6044. I made pattern A in a size Medium and I’m quite pleased with the fit of it. This is only the second time I’ve made a men’s dress shirt so it definitely isn’t of professional quality. I used wooden buttons to give it a more masculine feel since the colors and print are pretty feminine.
To make the toddler dress I used McCall’s Infants’ Lined Dirndl Dress M6015.
This pattern has become my go-to dress for her.
I’ve made this style of dress so many times that I can buy the fabric and have a completed dress on the same day. 🙌 I made pattern D in a size XL which is about equivalent to a size 2-3T. I used Telio Organic Cotton Jersey Knit in Turquoise for the bodice. The dress is accented with white piping and a white tulle overlay for the skirt. I also added a matching oversized headband bow because, well, bows.🎀
Since my MIL would be joining us for part of our Hawaiian trip I thought it would be nice to include her – both in the outfit fun and the family photos! For her, I made Tank A from McCall’s Misses’ Scoopneck Tank Top M7411 in a size Medium. While it wasn’t the most flattering straight from the pattern, I was able to alter it so it was a little more figure flattering. The cotton fabric just wasn’t right for that pattern but I imagine it would work nicely for something with a bit of stretch.
Lastly, for my crop top, I had to make the pattern myself. The pattern was created from an existing top I already had. I wore the original outfit to my friend’s boho bridal shower here. I opted for a more delicate look and used little mother-of-pearl buttons down the front. The skirt I bought from Winsdor.
We also wore our outfits to a luau and got so many compliments! People just couldn’t believe they were homemade! I hope this inspires you to create your own family outfits for your next vacation. The memories are worth the effort! Happy sewing! ✂

An impressive share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a friend who had been conducting a little homework on this. And he actually bought me breakfast due to the fact that I stumbled upon it for him… lol. So let me reword this…. Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanks for spending the time to talk about this topic here on your blog.
My spouse and I absolutely love your blog and find the majority of your post’s to be what precisely I’m looking for. can you offer guest writers to write content for yourself?
