Cleaning. A Necessary Evil. I’ve never been a fan of cleaning. But who is? I’m always on the lookout for anything that can make my job easier. This DIY bathtub cleaner has changed my life. No, I’m not being dramatic. Okay, maybe a little bit. But seriously, it’s so simple that it makes me wonder why no one told me this earlier. Cleaning your bathtub has never been easier! I don’t know about you but I absolutely love to have a clean bathtub.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Blue Dawn dish soap
- Vinegar
Directions for making Magic Bathtub Cleaner
Step 1 of 7
1. Measure and Microwave
- Measure out 1/2 cup vinegar into your liquid measuring cup and microwave for 1 minute.
- If you really want to be efficient, wipe down the inside of your microwave after you take out the vinegar. That vinegar steam just loosened up all the grime on the inside. Score! 🙌
Step 2 of 7
2. Hot Vinegar in the Spray Bottle
- Using a funnel, to avoid a mess, pour the hot vinegar into your spray bottle.
- You can also use a large bowl and a silicone cleaning brush if a spray bottle is unavailable.
Step 3 of 7
3. Add Dish Soap to Spray Bottle
- Add 4 oz (or 1/2 cup) of Blue Dawn Dish Soap to the spray bottle. Using the blue kind is really important, I just follow the rules. Use the blue kind and you’ll have great results too!
- Since I know that a half cup is equivalent to 4 oz (8 oz = 1 cup) I like to put my spray bottle on my kitchen scale and pour until I see 4oz on the screen. No extra measuring, no extra cleanup, just my style! 💁
Step 4 of 7
4. Swirl and Spray
- Give it a little swirl! You want the vinegar and dish soap to mix but do not shake it. You don’t want to create too many bubbles by shaking it up, especially if you have a cheap (Walmart) spray bottle as I do. Those bubbles will just clog up the tube and then it becomes a serious pain in the butt to spray. Speaking from experience of course.
- Spray it all over the tub! Start with the hard-to-reach places then end with the easy to reach, you’ll thank me later.
Step 5 of 7
5. Let The Magic Clean
- Leave it on for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Close the door (to prevent little hands from touching it) and go do whatever thousand other chores are on the list today, or go sit down. Up to you.
Step 6 of 7
6. Rinse and Wipe
- With the hot water running, take a cleaning rag and using a circular motion, wipe down the tub. The dirt and grime will just wipe right off. Straight up magic.
- Periodically, turn on the shower head to ensure all the magic solution gets rinsed off the tub.
Step 7 of 7
7. Dry your clean tub off!
- Wipe down with a dry rag. or don’t. It’s clean so you could just call it a day and let it air dry. Unless you have company coming or are taking pictures of your bathtub, like yours truly, you really don’t have to do this step.
Enjoy your clean tub! ✨ Yay! ✨
Tips and Tricks Before you get Started:
- 1:1 ratio. If you have 2 bathtubs to clean fancypants, then use 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of Dawn.
- Get yourself a GOOD spray bottle with wide tubing.
- Using a kitchen scale to measure helps expedite the process. I love mine and use it in so much more than just baking.
- Mine is made by Taylor and its the biggest loser addition. I guess it was created for my portion control but I use it for everything and have found it to be very accurate. I have had it for almost 9 years now. I’ve had to replace the batteries but other than that it is has become an invaluable member of my kitchen arsenal.
- Do not microwave your vinegar for longer than 1 minute. I put mine in for 2:00 minutes to try to get it EXTRA hot and it made a huge POP in my microwave, scared me half to death, and sent half the vinegar all over the inside of the microwave.
- When spraying your tub START with the hard-to-reach places. If you start with the easy-to-reach, you won’t have enough solution in the spray bottle to tilt and spray, making it next to impossible to get those areas well.
- I like to just dump whatever is left over of the solution around the edge of the tub, just for good measure.
- BE CAREFUL OF THE HOT WATER. It’s hot. Duh. Ouch.
- Don’t be afraid to use a little elbow grease on those really tough spots. Even magic takes a little effort.
- Have an old towel handy as some water might leave the tub when rinsing.
And that’s how you can clean your bathtub without scrubbing it!
It really is so stinking simple and will make cleaning your bathroom so much easier!
