There are so many projects that I wanted to do before my first was born that I never got around to actually doing. I had some pregnancy depression that made me into a sad panda about the whole transition. So annoying. Then my little girl was born and it was like I got snapped into my new role of mommy. Now with another on the way, I am taking advantage of this time to do all the projects I can! This project of how to sew a burp cloth can be done in an afternoon with a toddler. So like no time at all if you are sans toddler. 😂
Some people call them burp rags but I don’t like the word rags. To me, rags sound old, ratty and dirty and these adorable burp cloths are none of those things. These really are the easiest burp cloths you will ever sew, I’m serious. Just take two simple rectangles of fabric, sew them together, flip right-side out, and then topstitch. That is literally all you do. So stinking easy, you will want to make like a thousand of them. Yes, a thousand. 😍
Now that you have an idea of what you’ll be doing, let me show you exactly how to sew a burp cloth. Let’s get started!
What You’ll Need:
- 2 yards pre-packaged Diaper Cloth – Purchased from Walmart for $5
- 1/3 yard (or more) patterned fabric
- Thread to match
- Sewing Machine
Step 1: Cut 9″ x 16″ rectangles
Cut a total of 3 – 9×16″ rectangles. You’ll need two rectangles of diaper cloth and one of the patterned fabric. You could do one and one but after some experimenting, I preferred the thickness of using 2 layers of diaper cloth. I used my cutting mat and rotary cutter which made it so easy.
Step 2: Sew Rectangles with Right Sides Together
Using a 1/2″ seam (or the width of your machine foot) sew all the way around,
Step 3: Turn Right-Side Out and Press Flat
It also helps to use a chopstick to push out all the corners. Topstitch all the way around, including on the opening to close it. I like to use a 3.5 stitch length for topstitching but you do you boo.
Step 4: Fold into Thirds and Press
I like to iron really well so that there is a clear crease at the fold. Sew a straight stitch down the 2 fold lines. These 2 extra running stitches help keep all the layers together. They also make it super easy to fold later. (You know, after they’ve been washed – for the billionth time.)
And this is How to Sew a Burp Cloth!
The 2 layers of diaper cloth are super absorbent while the cotton is breathable. Since cotton comes in so many great inexpensive options, you can pick any cute fabric you want! Here are some of the other fabric combos I’ve made!
I love this set that I made for our new baby girl. Seriously, I can’t wait to use them!! These also make for great gifts! Good luck and happy sewing!
